Athena

Athena, often-stylized ATHENA, is an alternative rock band from the Philadelphia area.
Formed earlier this year, the band consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Owen
Crowley, lead guitarist Rich Giduck, drummer Sam Tattum, and bassist Matt Stretch.
Over the course of 2018, Athena played numerous shows around the area, and recorded several songs for an EP to be released in the near future. They’ve played well-known venues including 2300 Arena and Pub Webb in Philly, and Sprout Music Collective in nearby West Chester, PA. Some of the band’s influences include Kings of Leon, Young the Giant, and Grizzly Bear.

A few months ago, Athena dropped the single “Falling Fading.” The song has some great guitar work that features some well-chosen effects. All the instruments blend in very nicely together, as the production is also fantastic. Owen Crowley has excellent vocal skills that really capture the emotion of the song. As a listener, you can hear elements of Athena’s alternative influences, modern groups like Circa Survive, or bands from years ago like Sunny Day Real Estate. While still a technical and unique song, “Falling Fading” provides a very accessible primer to Athena for the listener.

Currently, Athena is playing a series of EP release shows, the most recent being a three-
hour set at Southside 313 Bar & Grille in Bethlehem, PA. The next chance to see them live is at the LITMAS benefit festival on December 23rd in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. LITMAS is an annual event that raises money to benefit people recovering from addiction to Heroin or other dangerous substances, and features several bands committed to helping with this cause. This band has great things coming on the horizon. Keep up with Athena over these next months and be sure to look out for their upcoming EP release.
